What are the side effects of Ambien? And can it become addictive?

My husband has a horrible time falling asleep, and his work schedule aids in his problems. He is on call 24/7 and sometimes has to sleep days and sometimes nights. His doctor suggested he may want to try Ambien, as a sleeping aid. What are the side effects of Ambien? Can it become addicting? Does it make you feel groggy in the morning?

These are the side effects of taking Ambien:

1. Hallucinations through all physical senses with varying intensity
2. Delusion or having a false belief of strongly held in spite of invalidating evidence
3. Feeling euphoric and dysphoria
4. Inability to judge well and impaired reasoning
5. Uncontrolled extroversion in social or interpersonal settings
6. excessive impulsiveness
7. rebound insomnia when ambien is stopped
8. ataxia or inability to maintain balance
9. decrease interest in sex
10. increase appetite
11. loss of memory
12. allergic reaction to the drug manifested by difficulty in breathing, closing of throat, swelling of lips, face, or tongue and hives
13. headache, drowsiness, dizziness and being clumsy
13. lightheaded, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation
14. feeling depressed
15. muscle pain

*Most common side effects are daytime drowsiness (2%), dizziness (1%) and diarrhea (1%)

Like any other drug, if Ambien is taken for an extended period of time, dependence can occur. Some people while under the influence of Ambien take more than is actually needed because they have forgotten prior usage. In cases like this, the elderly population is at risk.

WOW! That kind of schedule would mess anybody up! Everyone who takes Ambien seems to have a different experience, and most people seem to not experience many or severe Ambien side effects.

Some of the more common side effects of Ambien include:
* headache
* dizziness
* drowsiness
* somnolence
* stomach pain
* constipation
* difficulty keeping balance
If any of these persist or worsen, you should let your doctor know.

There are also rare patients who experience severe and life-threatening Ambien side effects, usually due to a severe allergic reaction. So if the person develops itchiness, hives or rash, or swelling (particularly around the throat, mouth and face), get medical attention right away. Others rare patients may experience mental or behavioral changes due to Ambien side effects. These may include hallucinations, mood changes, suicidal thoughts, memory problems, memory loss, confusion, aggression, agitation, anxiety, and depression. So you will want to keep an eye on someone close to you for a few weeks after they start taking Ambien. Doctors will usually schedule follow up visits a few weeks after beginning an Ambien prescription to check for unexpected side effects too.
