Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that adversely affects people's sleep patterns, causing them to fall asleep during the day or to experience periods of extreme fatigue. The true cause of narcolepsy has not yet been determined, but many experts believe that certain genes may not be adequately regulating the chemicals that the body produces for regulating sleep. It's thought that a deficiency in the production of hypocretin may be the culprit. Others are focusing on brain abnormalities that regulate REM sleep.
Narcolepsy usually affects young people in the teens or early 20's, but can come on at any age. But it is usually not diagnosed and goes untreated. Because there are no definitive causes and the symptoms are similar to symptoms of other problems, extensive tests are required to correctly diagnose the problem. Many of these tests may require a stay at a sleep lab or a sleep disorder clinic.
