What are the causes and prevention of snoring in adults?
Many people snore but there are some who snore loudly and frequently. I hear that if your spouse snores loudly and you can't get enough sleep you just turn them on to their side so they will stop snoring. I snore and my husband do this, he gently push me so that I will lie on my side instead of lying on my back. What are the causes of snoring in adults and how can I prevent my snoring?

There are many factors that can cause snoring in adults. Some of these factors can be controlled while others cannot. Some of the causes of snoring include:
*Heredity – Some people may inherit A narrow throat, enlarged adenoids, a cleft palate and other physical characteristics which can cause them to snore when they sleep.
*Aging - As people age, their throat becomes narrower that they used to be, and the muscle tone in their throat reduces, thereby causing them to snore when they sleep.
*Allergies or respiratory infections – some allergies and respiratory problems, such as asthma, sinus and cold may cause Blocked airways. This blockage makes inhalation difficult and can create a space in the throat and causing the person to snore.
*Obesity and overweight - This is another factor that can make people snore. Obese people usually have Fatty tissues and a poor muscle tone which can contribute to snoring.
*Smoking – Smoking or constantly being around people who smoke can create nasal congestion and lead to snoring.
*Consumption of Alcohol or medications – the consumption of alcohol and some type of medications helps the muscle to relax and cause people to snore when they fall asleep.
* Sleeping posture – This is the most common cause of snoring. When a person sleeps flat on their back, the flesh of their throat relaxes and then blocks the airway, leading to snoring
For the controllable causes of snoring such as obesity, smoking sleeping posture and consumption of alcohol and medication, the basic cure or preventive measures are:
• Raise the head of your bed
• Reduce the intake of alcohol and medications
• Clear out your nasal passages before sleeping
• Try to Lose some weight
• Sleeping on your side
