Is it better to sleep on a firm or soft mattress?

I always thought it was best to sleep on a firm mattress for support for the back. However, in recent years, I've been hearing more about that not being so. Now I am confused about which is best for my back and support during sleeping.

What is suppose to be the best overall type of mattress for sleeping? What is the best for the back?

My son worked for a mattress store and the most expensive mattresses are a bit firm in the beginning but they are posh, like sleeping on a padded cloud.

There are 3 necessities to living: eating natural foods, drinking water and sleeping. We spend $$ on food, good and bad for us each and every day. We drink liquids, good and bad for us each and every day, but we have been educated on the importance of a healthy diet and the importance of drinking enough water to not dehydrate the body; what we've not been educated on is the importance of a GOOD MATTRESS.

Investing $1500 on a mattress is like investing in years of well rested sleep. A $300 will have a boxy, springy feel and there's much tossing and turning as you sleep throughout the night. You may eat healthy, drink healthy, but you forgot to buy yourself a good, solid mattress.

My mattress cost me $1500 and my son because he got a discount at the store he worked, his mattress cost retail $5000. He never complains about sleep and is always well rested.

Do not under estimate the importance of a mattress and since good sleep is a necessity in life, instead of going to Hawaii for a week, think about spending that travel money on Heavenly restful but expensive mattress.

Probably a soft one. (Just guessing, though.)

If you're a side sleeper, it's better to have a soft mattress. In fact, most people buying tempurpedics are side sleepers. However, If you sleep on your back, a firm mattress is ideal. I've known "back sleepers" who actually preferred the floor over a mattress.
