How long should an adult take a nap?

When I was working as a staff in a local school, I usually find myself sleepy in the middle of the day. So, I see to it that I take a nap after lunch during our lunch break. After having a nap I feel much better. Now, that I am not working anymore, I still take a nap in the afternoon but sometimes I noticed that I find it difficult to sleep early at night. Does my nap affect my sleep at night. How long should an adult take a nap?

Many adults across the world take siestas in the middle of the day (around 4 or 5). I live in a very new agey community where a good percentage of people meditate around the same time every day at 5:00 pm. (some do twice a day). Transcendental meditation as it's called, results in a state of being that is really, really deep rest. It's said that 20 minutes of meditating is equal to hours of napping. It will leave you feeling very refreshed. Some people say they are going to meditate and actually just take naps - for about an hour or so. It just depends. Sometimes you need more sleep than others - stressful times or when you are catching up on sleep. I would just ride it out. If you can afford the time to nap, you are lucky and should go with it, maybe you will end up sleeping a little bit less at night.

Power napping increases productivity and helps with stress management, there's no doubt. But when and how long can definitely affect the outcome. While the correct amount of sleep can leave you feeling refreshed, alert and creative, too much sleep can cause blandness, lethargy and even headaches. How do you draw the like and how do you grab naps in a world which is not conducive to casual daytime slumber?

Scientists say that the best time for a nap is midday while napping after 4 or 6 can degrade your night time sleep quality. For most, a 20 minute nap is optimal. Some add 10 minutes up front for relaxation which they do not count as part of the nap - this can make a difference during times of stress. Don't go over 40 minutes though, or you'll go too deep into sleep and may be worse off.

While there are no general rules on adult naps during the day, it seems logical to use as much time to nap as you can reasonably afford to expend without jeopardizing personal responsibilities. The length of adult nap times certainly depends on the life styles, schedules, and overall needs of each individual. One person may be employed fulltime and thus enjoy only a twenty minute power nap after work in the evening. Another person may be a stay-at-home parent or a work-from home employee who tries to enjoy some much needed down time during their exhausting day. Once again, the amount of sleep the average adult might need during the day very likely depends on their level of exhaustion and the time they are able to invest in a nap without interruption and without delaying any necessary actions or responsibilities.
