Have any studies shown whether or not people should sleep with the TV or stereo on?

I have always wondered, if studies have shown whether or not it’s beneficial to fall asleep with the TV or the stereo on. For me it seems I am less rested in the morning if I fall asleep with either one, I’m not sure if it just doesn’t let me get into the deepest sleep possible, because of the background noise. I have some friends that can’t sleep unless they have some background noise. So, has anything been proven about sleeping methods benefitting or not from this type of background noise? Does a specific sound like that help you sleep better at night, why or why not?

There are difference in opinions among the researchers. Every people is different, so, their pattern of sleep is also quite different. Someone get easy sleep with TV/Stereo on; other feel a great disturb.

TV could be a great method for aiding sleep if done properly. With concern to the various ways of using the TV, there are at least three practices that should not be used, which prove ineffective. I will look into each of these and try to come up with possible solutions.
A few will always forget to put the sleep timer on. It is a silly idea not to turn this on; as it will mean that, you have to get up to switch the TV off later on, which will defeat the object entirely.
If you aren’t used to using the TV as a method of getting off to sleep then your body will not be used to it at first. The sleep timer will allow your body to feel relaxed after it has gone off to sleep and setting it for enough time won’t accidentally wake you up if it goes off just as your going off which would disturb you.

1. Turn off the television before bedtime. If you or your mate must watch TV, try to dim the brightness of the screen and avoid any shows that will increase stress or anxiety.
2. Clear out clutter in the bedroom. At the very least, remove piles from on and around the bed.
